Hey All,
So I was thinking of implementing a 'Story of the Week' spot on the thumbing.it front page.
Each week, stories with the most views, highest rating, or voted on in some other way will appear right on the front page.
Whaddya think?

I think that's a good idea- can encourage healthy competition and also provide great stories for those who like to read them!

That's a great idea. Plus, it is something that would change frequently, and I find that a changing front page makes people feel like the site is alive and hopping.

Didn't the old digihitch have featured hitchhikers? I think that having highly customisable member profiles with map extensions to record distances traveled would attract traffic to the site due to people posting links to their profiles. Kind of like hitchlog except with an emphasis on showcasing content.

Some weeks, especially at the beginning, there might not be anything worthy of being "Story of the Week". There also might be situation where someone's story about hitching 15,000 miles across Asia might not top someone's humorous 800 word story story about hitching into town in Maine on a rainy winter morning. That was one of my favorite stories on the old site. Maybe just have a page called "Highly Recommended" or something. Editing stories can be time-consuming sometimes and having to meet some weekly "Story of the Week" deadline would be real pain in the ass. Also, having to explain to people why their story was not selected as Story of the Week, few people have time for that.

Lightfoot- there shouldn't be any reason to have to "explain" to someone why theirs wasn't 'story of the week'. If so, it only shows the enormity of the person's ego.
Story of the week should include the fact that the person was a good enough writer don't you think? But I don't know all the specifics of the editing work you had to do during Digihitch days....geez, I know that my stories back in 2003 were raw as hell.

On the surface, I think it's a great idea. I'm an old former English teacher so I'm kind of biased in favor of having some minimal standards for story submissions. Stories should have a beginning, a middle, and an ending. There needs to be at least an awareness of spelling and punctuation. Pretty simple stuff. I would never consider submitting a story unless I thought it was really good. It was always an honor to get published. The beauty of Digihitch was that it was a fairly literate site. To make hitching more favorable to the mainstream, we should try to keep it fairly literate.
