Get it started, folks. What are your ideas for a new website name?

Well, I was one of the ones that wanted to takeover/invest into keeping Digihitch going.
That being said, I noticed that several other extensions were available, namely:
digihitch.it /.biz thumbing.it (my personal favorite)
I added the domain to watch list - my goal would be picking it up, and keeping the backlinks/age/SERP for it fully intact. If not possible, we need to corral the user database, send a mass mail, and get things going from there. If hosting is an issue, I can pay all/half. We'll need SpamAssassin, mods, etc. I can instill finances to you, Evan, if you have better contacts/ideas. Moving forward, maybe getting tiny monthly commitments from several diehard members - plus my finances, time, etc. - and not lose Digihitch anytime soon.
I think if you'd use archive.org's Wayback Machine, you'd see how the schema was then. I'd put my vote towards that graphical setup. Maybe integrate Skype into some chat-type of situation when people are on the move (or integrate a Tweet feed somewhere).
Just my hodgepodge for the moment,
Dave aka: walkoflife

Note that any .it registrations must come with additional $19.99/year additional 'trustee' payment (because it's supposed to be an Italy ccTLD). The trustee thing is a loophole (GoDaddy handles that stuff) to obtaining Italy name as an American/business entity.

I just wanted to let anyone who may not know the pronunciation of "Digihitch" is "Didja Hitch", as if you're saying "Did ya hitch". I was thinking maybe a play off that, like Digihitchyes or something like that.
Anyway, I'm pretty open on a new name. I think a .com would be the best since most people are familiar with that suffix. Also, this new site should be international, that is true, but I think we should focus the domain name to reflect that it is the U.S., since that was the country of focus for digihitch.

I am fond of HitchhikingHub Or HitchHub, thumbing.it is pretty catchy.

Actually, I like thumbing.it too- as long as the .it wouldn't be too confusing. My mind is in business mode and I have to remember this is a forum, not a business web page

People's brains aren't wired to deal with the "it" suffix, but it's clever and how hard would it be to remember? Would people not pursue the site because they think it is about hitching in Italy? That could scare some people off. But once the word gets out ...

Well,
thumbing.it is pretty great. Unless anyone can come up with a better alternative soon, that's the way we're gonna go. Anyone opposed?

I just wanted to let anyone who may not know the pronunciation of "Digihitch" is "Didja Hitch", as if you're saying "Did ya hitch". Actually I remember a poll a long while back where most people pronounced it digihitch as in "didjee hitch", digital hitch. That's how I and all the digihitchers I have met IRL pronounce it. But that's neither here nor there... If we went with a different name (such as thumbing.it-- i really like that), would it not be better to switch back over to digihitch after the domain name expires? I just can't imagine the new website garnering a strong enough following within the next few months to make the switch back not worth it. The name digihitch carries with it a history; some of it stigma, but a familiar history nonetheless.

Haha- "digital hitch", that's a good one. It was Morgan himself who told me in person that he meant "Digihitch" to be a play off of "Didja hitch" as what I explained before. Others apparently created their own explanation.
The only problem I foresee with taking Digihitch back is that in truth, Kasha may never close the site and I don't think we should wait around for her to do it. In the beginning it will be work getting people over, but with good activity that Digihitch isn't getting, the new site should be golden in 6 months or so.
Anyway, I agree thus far with thumbing.it - can't think of a better alternative.
If no one else does, we should go with that and then get to work on pulling everyone over.

Thumbing.it is VERY clever and catchy. Even with an uncommon suffix, it will be easy to remember, purely out of novelty. I think we SHOULD go with it.

thumbing.it seems to cover widespread activities covered in Digihitch. I'd expect a deluge of visitors based off the name alone.

It's official!
Thumbing.it will be the new site name and url.
The url will be purchased and hosted through vendor accounts, and this will take a few days.
So shhhhhhhh! Don't go telling everyone just yet or someone else might snatch it up.
Thanks go to Dave, aka walkoflife for coming up with the name.
And thanks to everyone for your input.
